In his brilliant book Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine, Mike Michalowicz suggests taking a small percentage of all your revenue before you do anything else with it and allocating that to a profit savings account. (This is different from traditional accounting methods, in which revenue minus expenses equals profit.) By taking your profit first rather than treating it as an afterthought, you force yourself to shave down your expenses to fit whatever’s left in your business expenses (opex) account. This makes you profitable from day one that you implement the “Profit First” system. As each quarter passes, you can bump your percentage of profits up.
